WTA designed the 100,000 sq.ft. Monsanto Research Center for Plant Biodiversity for the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. This facility includes research laboratories, offices and support space, a herbarium (leaf collection storage), an interpretive area, and a library. The building features:

  • A priority on "green" architecture, influencing decisions with respect to environmental considerations
  • Extensive energy analysis to select, develop and fine-tune systems selections
  • HVAC criteria for preservation and insect control
  • Building zoning to separate environmentally critical (temperature + 1 deg. F.) and humidification (+ 5 percent relative humidity) from normal office space
  • Low temperature supply air system to reduce fan energy and system cost
  • Heat reclaim to reduce cooling and dehumidification energy
  • Storage for the Garden's entire book collection (121,000 books including at least 8,000 rare books)
