The Monsanto - Nidus Center for Scientific Enterprise is a not-for-profit business incubator that contains startup companies focused on plant science, biotechnology and medical research. The 40,000 sq.ft. "green" facility was awarded a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating of Silver. The building's high-efficiency systems use 40% to 60% less energy than the current norm. Project features include:
- Lab services arranged for flexibility to customize according to user needs
- Air handling units use molecular sieve heat wheels for air-to-air heat recovery
- Boilers for heating hot water are direct vent high efficiency type
- Chillers use R-134a, a "green" refrigerant
- Lab ventilation uses variable air volume controls for safety and energy conservation
- Roof run off water is recycled for site irrigation
- Lab equipped with high efficiency direct/indirect lighting with occupancy controls
